MFW-PAN CYBERNEWS – MARCH, 2005 - CORRECTED EDITION
Midwest Fiction Writers Published Authors’ Network’s
Monthly Online Newsletter

Hello, readers and friends of Midwest Fiction Writers!
It’s almost Spring–that time of year thou mayest in a
Midwesterner’s sunny smile and paste-like skin behold.
Look out! For us it’s time for shirt sleeves and shorts.
And from the keyboards of four of your MFW favorites, it’s
time for more terrific reading. We’ve got contemporary
romantic suspense from Kathleen Eagle; historical romance
and suspense from Nita Abrams; a wonderful revival of
historical fantasy from Betina Krahn, and another
“Heartbreaker” from Cait London. By the way, of the four,
only Nita and Kathleen have been enjoying a mostly mild
Minnesota winter. Betina could tell us all about Florida
hurricanes, and Cait has been pumping flood water out of
her Missouri home. Global warming, anyone?

After you read our book news, we hope you’ll hop on over to
www.midwestfiction.com for the photos that complement this
newsletter. You’ll find them on the March Books page. And
look for links to all our authors and news about our group.
Be sure to check out our local writing workshops.

NIGHT FALLS LIKE SILK
Kathleen Eagle
Harper Torch (ISBN: 0-06-103244-1)

A connoisseur of exquisite objects, Cassandra Westbrook
collects whatever catches her eye. While attending an
auction, she is captivated by a set of old Lakota Sioux
ledger drawings and by the stranger who persists in bidding
against her. She wins the bid, but now she’s in for
trouble.

Thomas Warrior lifted himself from the mean streets of the
inner city to become famous beyond his imaginings. But
Thomas’s talent is a gift that haunts his darkest hours.
His creations seem to take on a life of their own,
threatening everything he holds dear. When both the
drawings and her nephew suddenly disappear, Cassandra must
turn to Thomas for answers. But is her enigmatic lover a
hero, or a tricker? Either way, can this wealthy but
vulnerable woman afford to let him steal her heart?

Greetings from Kathleen!

I’m so excited that NIGHT FALLS LIKE SILK is finally
available to you in paperback. This is one of the few I’ve
written in direct response to reader demand, but it took me
a long time. In my own mind, the hero had some growing up
to do. But readers had been begging for the sequel to THE
NIGHT REMEMBERS since it was first published in 1997.
“Give us Tommy T’s story!” they wrote. He was one of my
favorite characters, too, so I gave him time. Finally, his
story began to take shape in my head and then in NIGHT
FALLS LIKE SILK. It’s Tommy T, irresistible as ever, but
all grown up and just as sexy as you knew he would be.

Said Publisher’s Weekly of Night Falls Like Silk when it
came out in hardcover (10/03): “Edge-of-the-seat
suspense...Her scene setting is convincing and her pacing
flawless...Eagle enriches the romance genre.”

I hope you’ll read the book and decide for yourself. Be
sure to visit me online at www.kathleeneagle.com. One new
feature is a discussion guide to go with NIGHT FALLS LIKE
SILK. I’m adding other features as time permits. I love
to talk about my hobbies–horses, history, collecting
everything from dolls to American Indian art and
artifacts–and show how my passion for such things
influences my stories.

THE SPY'S KISS
Nita Abrams
Zebra (0-8217-7853-6)

Can a man be TOO charming?
Hidden away in her uncle's country home, Serena Allen has
had little difficulty fending off the few suitors willing
to overlook her scandalous past—until Julien Clermont
appears. The mysterious young aristocrat claims to be
interested in the earl's famous butterfly collection, and
quickly shows even more interest in Serena. But Serena
does not trust her attractive suitor. Can it be a
coincidence that foreign documents entrusted to the earl
have begun to disappear and reappear in odd places?

Julien is indeed on a secret—and very personal—mission, one
that prevents him from disclosing his real identity to
Serena. When the truth comes out, however, Julien faces a
terrible choice: betray the woman he has grown to love, or
risk forfeiting his own life?

A NOTE FROM NITA

This is the first book I have written set primarily at an
English country house, and I had a wonderful time learning
about Georgian mansions while constructing the "secret
passages" in THE SPY'S KISS. The staff at Syon Park (A
beautiful estate outside of London, featured in movies such
as GOSFORD PARK) gave me a private tour of the house when I
wrote and explained that I was an author working on a novel
set in Regency England! The photo shows me in front of the
conservatory there, which I 'borrowed' for my fictional
house in the novel.

I love hearing from readers (nk2@nitaabrams.com) and am in
the process of reconstructing my website
(www.nitaabrams.com), which will have more photos and
information about all of my previous books.

THE ENCHANTMENT
Betina Krahn
Dell (ISBN# 0-440-24267-3)

Aaren, a fierce and stunning six-foot warrior maiden, is
truly a woman for all times. . .
strong and capable. . . a warrior in search of her own
heart as well as her place in
Viking society. Jorund– big, easy-going, and sensual– is
both the heir to his clan’s high-seat
and the undisputed favorite of the women of his village.
When a strange old man brings the
enchanted warrior maiden Aaren to his people, Jorund finds
himself torn between the ferocious
battle legacy of his clan and his desire to someday bring
peace to his people.

Two great warriors must prepare for a battle that will
carry them beyond bloodshed and
violence to the true enchantment that is the birthright of
every man and woman who
has ever loved.

Winner of the RT Reader’s Choice Award for Fantasy Romance

From Betina: “Greetings from sunny Italy, where I’m making
new friends. . . like this guy named David!
I am so pleased to be able to bring one of my two favorite
books (My Warrior’s Heart) back to readers. . . with
rewrites that make what reviewers called a “spellbinding”
story even more compelling. The Enchantment is even more
timely and relevant today than it was in 1992. . . women’s
roles in the military and in society at large just keep
expanding. And the colorful language (both researched and
developed) for the book and the themes of violence and
power and peace have stood the test of time. I believe The
Enchantment contains some of my best writing and certainly
contains more of my heart than any other book I’ve written!
Enjoy!”

TOTAL PACKAGE
Cait London
Avon ISBN- 0-373-76642-4

(4th in the Heartbreaker miniseries)
When a girl is furious about her long-time lover getting
married, she really needs to stand naked in the moonlight
and yell, “What’s wrong with me?” But Sidney Blakely
wasn’t expecting a tall gorgeous suspected cliff-jumper to
share her mountain and she’s set to talk him down, to make
him see that life is worthwhile. Now “Sid” is world
jockeying photographer, used to the company of men, and a
girl who wears cargo pants, army boots, and boxer shorts
instead of panties. Raised by a tough military father and
with two sisters, Stretch and Junior, Sid sees romance a
little different—like equal opportunity, opening doors for
men, holding their chairs while they sit, that sort of
thing.

And Sid hasn’t a clue that Danya Stepanov (alias “the
jumper”) is fascinated with her, that he’s found his love
and is playing a come-get-me game. He’s perfectly happy to
let her lead while dancing, but then love flip flops. In
over-drive, Sid makes her move, shocking them both. Danya
had wanted to court her, but now Sid has to resolve her
very feminine feelings for a guy who has just arranged to
have her whole family move in with him. The game is on,
and Danya plans to win…

FROM CAITTOPIA:

A girl just has to have fun, and when writing humor, that’s
what I share with many of my heroines. I’m enjoying a very
busy, interesting career and 20 years ago, I signed my
first contract. I have somewhere around 60 books now, and
at a recent book discussion, the bookseller lined up my
backlist, which looked immense. We chatted a bit about
writing experiences, and a whole lot of it was fun.

Please note my photograph. The “goggles” date the picture,
but it has always been a favorite. Check out the pressed
lips; these cover braces. Try wrapping your lips around
that much metal and still having fun! Then the gold
circles are actually Autographed by Cait labels used on my
autographed books. However, I have a lot of fun pasting
them everywhere. Like I said, a girl has to have fun and I
do.
