MFW-PAN CyberNews SEP 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MFW-PAN CYBERNEWS - SEPTEMBER 2005 Midwest Fiction Writers Published Authors' Network's Monthly Online Newsletter Where did the summer go? It’s September. Labor Day. Back to school. In Minneapolis we celebrate the harvest with one of the biggest state fairs in the country and a Renaissance Festival to rival any other. ANY other. Perfect inspirations for romantic fiction. Members of Midwest Fiction Writers have had a busy summer. We’re really proud of our many contest finalists. In Romance Writers of America’s prestigious competitions we had two Golden Heart finalists for outstanding unpublished manuscripts and three RITA finalists, recognized for their excellent published books. We celebrated bigtime when Susan Kay Law brought home the RITA for Best Short Historical Romance. Now we look forward to our own annual Fall Harvest Workshop at the end of September and our writers’ retreat in October. Look for complete information about these and other special events at www.midwestfiction.com. And don’t miss our September books.... A VIEW OF THE RIVER by Kathleen Eagle Mira (ISBN: 0778320987) Rochelle LeClair has her hands full with turning the old family estate into a B&B in hopes of keeping a roof over her elderly aunt’s head. It’s just like her sister to complicate matters by commandeering the Rosewood Estate for her wedding. With a house full of gold-digging wedding guests, what’s Rochelle to do when Aunt Meg hires Ojibwe medicine man Birch Trueblood to settle Rosewood’s restless spirits with a purification ceremony? Her family history–the fact that her great-grandfather’s lumber business displaced Birch’s ancestors from their ancestral home a century ago–makes dealing with ghosts a little awkward. Lively characters and family secrets–not to mention the much more recent memory of Rochelle’s not-so-secret crush on the mystical medicine man–make A VIEW OF THE RIVER a delicious read. Visit www.kathleeneagle.com for more detail, photos, and an excerpt. Kathleen is WAY into nostalgia these days... I’ve been a member of Midwest Fiction Writers since I moved to Minnesota 14 years ago and Romance Writers of America for over 20 years, and the best part of both groups is FRIENDS. Girlfriends, mostly. The two writers who share the September book page with me are excellent examples. Judy Baer and I met in Fargo, ND in 1983 at a workshop given by LaVyrle Spencer. Neither of us had published a book, but we attended the third RWA conference that summer, and the rest is history. I won a Golden Heart that year and went on to sell my winning manuscript to Silhouette. Judy discovered Inspirational Romance. Over the years we’ve attended many more conferences, and we’ve partied, laughed and cried together as fast friends are bound to do. And then there’s Lois Greiman, with whom Judy and I also share North Dakota connections, along with our interests in writing and riding. I think Judy will agree that of the three of us, Lois is definitely the best rider. Horseback, that is. I happen to be the best car rider. Anyone else is welcome to drive; I’ll gladly ride along. Lois did all the driving last spring when we went to Nebraska for a great book event. I fell down on the navigating job, and we overshot Lincoln by about 30 miles. I’m also an excellent chatterer. But I think I can safely say that, as writers, we three–like our State Fair and Renaissance Festival–rival any you can name. Don’t believe me? Try our September books! MILLION DOLLAR DILEMMA Judy Baer Steeple Hill (ISBN: 0373785488) Preacher’s daughter Cassia Carr pitches $5 into an office pool on the assumption that it’s for a shower gift. Neither gambler nor Lotto player, Cassia is shocked when and her co-workers actually win the $20 million lottery jackpot. Now Cassia must figure out where God would have her donate her share of the windfall. In keeping with publisher Steeple Hill’s motto, the theme is “love, faith, and getting it right.” TAMING THE BARBARIAN Lois Greiman Avon (ISBN: 006078394X) The countess of Briarburn craves excitement, adventure, and passion ... But she never dreamed she'd find it in the arms of a warrior from centuries past. Be sure to visit www.midwestfiction.com for photographs of Kathleen, Judy, and Lois, more MFW news, and links to all of our terrific authors. If you like what you see, please spread the word.
